Opa's place -Where an old rooster visits with friends

A librarian was quietly working when three chickens walked in and jumped on to the counter eyed her and said “BUK BUK BUK” Not sure she was sane she gave the chikens three books and they left. An hour later in walked the chickens again jumped onto the counter, returned the books they had taken earlier and said “BUK BUK BUK” Now convinced she was out of her mind she gave them three books, they took one each and left. This time she decided to follow them. She followed them down to the local pond and stood horrified as they threw the books into the water. All of a sudden they flew back out of the pond and a frog stuck it’s head up saying “RREDIT RREDIT RREDIT!”

Long day. Drove 50 miles to work on the old Sears house that my best friend Bob and his wife bought. Just driving that far during rush hour city traffic is enough to make my old body tired, but coupled with work it makes for a long day. After working all day I came home and butchered one of the two deer I shot during gun season.

In years past I would have butchered both of them but after finishing one I was tired. Since the temperature is cool and drastically falling tonight it can wait until tomorrow after work. One thing that did help was that both are milk breath deer so they only take a couple of hours each. I know lots of folks get their deer processed in much less time but I'm sure they don't trim as carefully and completely as I do. I figure since the indians made bowstrings and sewing thread from the "fell" I'd rather not eat it. I know the extra effort makes for a much nicer looking and palatable final product and having processed over 400 deer in my life I think I have figured out the best methods to use.

How are you doing Sir?
I hope that every things doing just perfect with you, I read your posts, but I am not much of a talker, but I wanted to say Hi to you. and about butchering animals, I did some Lambs and goats, but nothing compair to 400, if it takes you 2 hours, it might take me 4 LOL.
take care

My neighbor is a young fellow, 45, and we joke about how he has become an adopted son. Tonight he came over volunteering to help so that he can learn my method of processing venison. He was amazed at how I fillet the hanging hind quarters and then divide it into three roasts and a little for the grind. I told him that after he has cut up as many as I have you can't help but learn the easiest way to do it.

As anyone seen the Hallmark film with Sam Elliott "November Christmas"? Watched it the other day. It's a sad story filled with hope and a happy ending. Found myself getting a little misty eyed a time or two. Of course old Sam did a hell of a acting job.

Yes, Opa, I saw that the other night..........and thought of you. Thought, I bet "our Sam" would be a neighbor exactly like that.

I'm glad to hear the deer season was a good one for you and that you are passing a valuable skill on............so many are lost.

A bit of snow on the ground here this morning, not enough be make anything white but enough to remind us what is in store.....

I would like to think that I will be remembered as a wonderful friend and a good neighbor. To some it may sound hokey, but each day I wake I give thanks that I still have a pulse and start each day with the intent to be the nicest person that people meet during the course of the day. Occasionally I will encounter some that require a little more effort on my part but by enlarge my efforts are returned to me many times over.

One of the more difficult things I have to do is try and select television shows that are G rated. The G stands for Granny. If a show has even mild profanity, or sexual innuendo she sits there huffing and puffing so I sometimes wonder if I am at a train station listening to a steam engine sitting at a siding. Heaven forbid if the women have what she feels is an excessive amount of skin showing.

Even if a show meets the G criteria if it is something she isn't interested in it is impossible for me to watch it. Envariably she will wait until a critical spot in the dialog and decide to ask me a bunch of questions. Tonight I found "Celtic Woman" on PBS and she thoroughly enjoyed it. Better still she only talked about how beautiful and talented the women were when they were breaks.

I am thrilled to still have my mother and having her live with us is probably the best way to insure that the quality of her life is the best it can possibly be; but when you become an old man you have pretty much figured out how you want to live your live and having your mother live with you changes it in ways you can't imagine.

Morning all, is it Spring yet? It's been very quiet round here lately - is everyone hibernating?

Today is hatch day for what was supposed to be my replacement layer flock but only 4 eggs made it to lockdown.

I don't know what I am doing wrong but I just can't seem to get a decent hatch. I really don't want to brood only 3 or 4 chicks over the winter by themselves so I may throw some more eggs in there after this hatch, i have a couple ideas I might try to get a better hatch rate.

We had a bit of a thaw at the weekend but we are still left with around 2ft of snow and the forecast is calling for some heavy snowfall toward the end of the week again. I was supposed to be getting a new fence put in the big field for the rheas this month but I guess that will be on hold until after the New Year now.

Off to have some hot soup to warm my cockles. Stay cozy everyone!
