Opa's place -Where an old rooster visits with friends

Hopefully everyone had a wonderful Xmas. When I was on the fire department I would trade work schedules with my friend Bob so that I would be off on Christmas eve and I would work Xmas day. I would celebrate Xmas eve and my sons would then spend Xmas at their mother's. That eliminated the possibility of arguements with the ex and was much easier on the boys.

As my boys grew up, I realized that once your sons marry you will rarely see them on a holiday. So rather than cause unnecessary strain in their lives I continued the tradition of celebrating on the 24th. This year David and his wife Amy were the only ones that could make it but I also invited the neighbor who calls himself my adopted son. Both of Hope's sons and their families came so the house was filled with the sound of excited and happy little kids. Some thing about their anticipation adds to make the season complete.

Yesterday was spent in a continual feeding spree of holiday goodies and I have yet to determine how we were to eat from daylight till dark. The adopted neighbor and Hope's step father came at suppertime to help reduce the amount of leftovers. Other than the brief time they were here all Hope and I did was snack, nap, and watch old holiday movies on television.

I got up this morning planning on hunting, but coughing woke me before the alarm. Hope's grandson had a snotty nose on Friday and I think he left some kind of little kid cold bug behind. You know the kind. One that barely slows them down but when you catch it it feels like you have been beaten with a stick. The deer who probably say geshundheit to me by flashing their tails as they ran away.

I'm very surprized that I am able to type this. Several keys have not worked for days and I took it in for repair and they had to order a new keyboard that won't be in until next week. Now for some strange reason it has started working. Well I am not going to complain too much as at least I am able to get on line.

Both Granny and Hope have been after me to go to the Doctor for a physical and this past Wednesday I finally went. The few days that I did feel like hunting were quite painful to walk so I decided that I needed to find out what is going on. Thursday was spent at the hospital undergoing a vast array of testing. Over two dozen xrays were taken and I am quite certain that radiologists must spend a great deal of time reading about the Inquisition. Monday I must fast so I can have the blood tests performed and then in a couple of weeks I go back for the results of the tests. I suspect the doctor will tell me that I am old.

Good Morning Opa, I'm glad you are able to be here again....but sorry to hear you caught a bug!!! I hope all your tests come back normal and "getting old" is the diagnosis.

From what you tell us of Granny, you got good genes so "getting old" for you shouldn't be so bad.

Another year is quickly drawing to a close. I know there are those who don't much care for the holidays, yet for me the holidays are a reminder to take time and reflect upon my life. The road I've taken has had it's share of twists and turns. Occasionally I hit a few pot holes, but still it has been a journey that I have been fortunate to have traveled. Those that I have met along the way have added much to my life. All of you from BYC have contributed greatly to making the journey a joyous one and for your friendship I am truly grateful. Hopefully the coming year will bring much happiness to all of you.

Happy New Year to all my friends here, it has been a wonderful year getting to know all of you.

I hope 2011 brings you health, wealth and much joy!

Well I definitely am ending the year on a high note. Got the results of all the tests back and they actually weren't too bad. My vitamin D levels were extremely low and that causes fatigue. So a vitamin for that. Additionally my cholesterol was a little elevated so medication for that. The xrays show arthritis in both hips and hands as well as a old fracture in the lumbar area of my spine. They also scheduled me to see a hand surgeon about removing the calcium deposit from my right thumb.

The best thing though was that this morning I was in my deer blind before sunrise and 15 minutes after sunrise I had two real nice does on the ground. I field dressed them,
came home, and as soon as I finish lunch I will go out to skin them. One of the smarter things I have done was to install a hoist and a trolley system in the truck bay portion of my shop. It certainly makes skinning deer much easier and if necessary I could hang as many as eight deer at once.

I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable New Years eve and I thank all of you for you friendship this past year.

Happy new year to all. We're getting pounded here. Two blizzards back to back. Drifting is unreal. 60 mph. winds tonight. Wind chill is -40 degrees. Zero traffic. Roads are all drifted shut. The power is still on, so all is good. Hopefully get dug out in the next couple of days and get back to fishin'............ Woody
