open air coop in cold climates?

My coops are open air coops, but in the winter I cover 2 or 3 sides depending on how cold it is, with plastic. It doesnt get to very cold here maybe into the single digits only a few nights ot of the winter. My birds have always done great. But Im not sure youd want to try it in WI.

Thanks for all the great ideas guys! I'll have to think on this some more, wind isn't a huge problem here, so we wouldn't have much snow drifting in. It's interesting to hear that there are some doing it up in Canada where Pat is from. If the roosts were on the back wall of the box stall/run in, they could share body heat with the horse/ cow in the coldest months...

Thanks again! If I ever try it, I'll post pictures and let you know how it turns out!!!

I don't think I would try an open sided coop where I live...but you are right about ventelation....actually patandchickens is to be credited for my ventelation....and I have to say that my birds are loving her for it. I have opened up the gable ends of my coop completely and even though it is bitterly cold here my birds are healthy. I don't close it up at all. They do have 7 feet of wall beneath though so they don't get drafts. You can see a pic of my coop on my page...that was before I opened up the gable ends for ventelation

I am in Texas! We are building a somewhat, open design coop. It is 95 today and expected to be 100 for the next 7 days. I think we are going to face the coop to the South and have 1/2 walls on sides but the South side will be all wire. Roofed with an overhang of at least 2 ft.
