open area roosting ideas??

inside my coop I have strapped together Aspen branches, this can be moved anywhere, outside under a tree or into another area. Inside my pole barn, I have separators between the stalls, the chickens roost on those also...they will always find something to stand on!

Trees work real nice.

I would love to have some trees over there but I worry that they would be able to hop out of our yard. Maybe some small dwarf type fruit or nut trees would be ideal... not sure.

Here is a photo of the area... you can't really see it but there is a large tree on the side of the house as well as in the back yard to the right of where the photo was taken so the birds do get shade most of the morning and after 3pm or so.

We also plan to expand the coop and raise it off the ground come fall and put the run and sand pit underneath it which will provide plenty of shade

.... can't wait!

Looks very nice.

A dwarf fruit tree might very well work.

I live on a farm; so I'm not much help I'm afraid.

How old are your chicks? When they mature they will hop right up on that ledge and go over the other side. You may want to consider some time of top on the whole run...

They are 6 weeks old. The fence measures 3.5 feet and the hardware cloth comes up between the 2x2's so they will not want to roost on the fence. They may hop on it a few times but I am not overly concerned. We have a dog that hangs out in the rest of the yard that the chickens will avoid. Plus, if they do get over when the dog is inside, the yard is fully fenced, my only concern would be the pool if they fit through the bars once fully grown. Although I have read that chickens avoid large bodies of water so they may not even bother with the pool. We were originally going to let the chickens have full run of the entire yard but we also have 2 children under the age of 3 and I didn't want the chicken poop all lover the yard where the kids play. I don't think they will bother hopping the fence though and if they do will will extend it higher... no biggie.
