My Coop
We are currently in the planning stages of our coop. My plan is to make a chicken tractor that I will park during the winter (Oct/Nov to April/May). I have a frame for a tempo garage that is 8.5' x 10' that will be attached to a base made of 2x4. The coop portion will be 5' x 8.5' and will be raised approx. 20" from the ground. My plan was to do the wire mesh during the summer while we drag it around the yard, then put in a solid floor for winter. The run portion will be covered in 1/2" hardware cloth, with a 12" apron, and a tin roof (and wrapped in plastic in winter).

My question: if a weasel manages to somehow get into the run, will it be able to climb/reach up into the coop part through the open floor? I have 2x4" wire fencing that I was planning on using, so it could pass through that, but could it actually reach?

Predators in this area are weasels, fox, lynx, bobcat, dogs, bears, and birds of prey. No rats, racoons, or snakes.

Edit to add: I'm open to design ideas/tips as well. The walls of the coop will be insulated with rigid foam sandwiched between 1/4" plywood. Open for about 1' down from the peak on either side for ventilation. Planning on getting 4 chickens in the spring. Normal summer highs are 25c to winter lows of -30c

I’m not going to worry too much about the bears. Not much will stop them and I have no desire to put up electric fencing.

X2 with you on bears.

Sadly, weasels are super good at climbing and squeezing into tiny holes.

So yes, either wrap everything in a full box of tiny hole hardware cloth, or expect that every year or 2, a wesel will find its way in. :(

And yes1/2 inch holes are small enough to keep them out. I just looked up an article that showed smallest holes entered were .65 inches (16 mm)
