when i was given hens this past spring, i didn't want to reach under because of their pecking. finally, i tapped their beak (sp) once very gently if they pecked me, rubbed their breast a little and spoke in a quiet tone. now, i don't know when the last time they pecked. the may swell up, but they don't get show any orneryness.
