This is a Japanese/Sumatra Bantam cross chick who will be 24hrs old at 6pm today. Hatch was 2 days delayed after a short power outage during incubation. This was the last chick to hatch and needed some assistance. Spent most of last night unable to stand but as of this morning has joined the other chicks in eating, drinking and running around. But it’s left foot seems slightly off to me, as does the way it moves around. Does this seem like something that will correct on its own or should I intervene?

Parents have been well fed and have had no issues, both have been in my possession since day old chicks as well.

Black chick with yellow toes-

It's not gait. It's a balance issue. Your chick appear to have a very, very slight genetic caused vitamin deficiency that affects the nervous system.

Poultry Nutri-drench would have most of the vitamins it needs. I would add vitamin E 400iu each day to the Nutri-drench dose. Break open a capsule and squeeze the oil into the side of the chick's beak. You should see dramatic improvement within days.

To get the chick to open its mouth, grasp the head from behind and wrap your thumb and middle finger around the head, applying slight pressure to the sides of the beak until the chick opens its mouth. Insert an eye dropper or syringe at the right side of the beak, avoiding the middle of the back of the throat where the airway is located. Just do a tiny bit at a time, giving the chick time to swallow.

That’s a brilliant solution, thank you! I don’t have an vitamin e capsules, but I can remedy that tomorrow morning first thing. This chick is easy to handle, but would it be prudent to boost the other chicks as well?

The Nutri-drench would certainly benefit the rest of the chicks as well, but they will be fine without the additional vitamin E that this particular chick needs. Probably in a week, you can stop the vitamin E if you see the chick getting around normally.

Make a "weak tea" with the a quarter teaspoon of Nutri-drench in a quart of chick water. Mix fresh each day. Keep it up for a couple weeks, and your chicks will be off to a splendid start.

Thank you! I’ll go tonight, I needed an excuse to stop and get ice cream anyways. :bow
