Opinions on this Tennessee Walking Horse, and the breed in general..

I know all about gift horses too LOL

I see what you mean about the difference in build. I found a page about Midnight Sun, and he was much stockier than the modern show horses. I guess that's part of their heritage having being used for farm work as well as pleasure in the past. Now it's not necessary, they're finer boned and bred for looks.

I breed Walking Horses and Saddle Horses. They are the only horse for me. I had a Walking Mare that was 25 years old. She was almost 15 hh. I took her on trail rides on she was the most sure footed horse. If you would like to send me her pedigree I can look it over for you. The older blood lines are not always tall horses. My mare now comes from very old lines and she is only 15 hh. She comes from the Midnight and Colors lines. Now they breed these horses to be high strung idiots. They are also doing it to the Spotted Saddle Horse too. I'll get off my soap box now.

Thanks Gloria, i'd really appreciate that. Obviously what's on paper and what a horse is actually like are sometimes two different things, but it's good to know whether the cards might be in my favour or not and whether the asking price is fair. My FIL says not, in a state where QH's rule LOL. Also, what does H.F. mean?

He is out of Dumas Choice by Cash's Mister Shadow. Grandsires are Coin's Hard Cash WGC and I'm Dumas Walker, Grand dams are I Am Delight's Shadow and Passionate Choice. Then he goes back to Pride's Gold Coin, Pride's Donna, Sun's Delight D. WGC, Shadow's Fancy Lady H., The Pusher C.G. WGC, Mark's Go Go Girl, Pride's Choice Cut, and Peddlin' Passion. The earliest generation I have to hand is Pride of Midnight H.F., Delight's Joanna, Pride of Midnight H.F., Sun's Pretty Donna, Midnight Sun WGC, Wilson Snip's Change, Go Boy's Shadow WGC, Jed's Shady Lady, Drug Dealer, Go Boy's Blue Gal M., Mark of Carbon WGC, Sun's Starless Night, Pride of Midnight H.F., Courageous Lady K., Pride's Peddler BH, and Go Boy's Marquita.

H. F.=Harlinsdale Farm. Most likely the farm that bred them, or at least registered them. I think it's more common to see the farm name at the beginning of the name now a days.

He is gorgeous. My grandparents had TWH (when my farther was really young) and you can see the difference in the pictures of their horses and todays stick figures.

I really like the stocky build, very old fashioned. You will see that type of build in old style Morgans, too....they aren't supposed to look like Egyptian Arabians, like you see a lot of breeders doing, they were meant to be an all around horse, not just for show.
Okay I'll stop rambling...

A light-boned horse wouldn't last long out here, between the ranch terrain and the remuda.

Dumas Walker horses are usally pretty good Horses. A friend of ours has a Mare out of Dumas. It's a great mare. With those bloodlines I would have no problem buying the horse if you like it. It has some of the same bloodlines as our horses.

Here is a short explanation.

A horse is measured from the ground to the withers in what is called hands, coming from turning your hand sideways (palm down) and hand over hand measuring the horse.

1 hand is 4 inches. So, hands are said as 15, 15.1, 15.2, 15.3, 16.

I figured you meant 15 1/2 hands high when you posted, which would be said as 15.2 hands.

Hope this clears it up a little for you.

Jean

Thanks, Jean - great explaination. I'm sorry if I came across rude, but the --.5 thing is a big pet peeve of mine right up there with red and white colored horses.
