Ok we bought 6 chicks on Tuesday, we have NO idea of sex as they were all mixed up by a idiot employee. A farmer tried to help us but as you all know that doesnt always work. Well today I called and they got in a mess of AmberLink Pullets. GUARANTEED PULLETS!!!!!!!!

So should I suck it up, go purchase 4 more chicks to add to the 6 we just got?

The thing is we live in the city we are only allowed to have 10 chickens. We HAVE 4 laying hens, getting 2 BA hens this weekend. And then we will have the chicks. I told my Mom that if heaven blesses us and they are all hens then we will keep our favorites and sell the rest, and if they are Roos well you all know what will happen to them.......

Well come on folks I know we all have the chick fever, and I feel like I already have the brooder going, whats 4 more right right right?

where in southern VA? i'm from the Richmond area (well, about 20 minutes outside the city)

I would worry about your neighbors! If they know about your chickens and don't care, then I saw, what is a few more?!

HOWEVER, if they don't like it, then they might call you in if they find out you've got more than 10!

Also, how big is your coop and how many acres? That is something to keep in mind when considering how many chickens... If you are doing the basic calculations, to have 10 chickens, you need at least something equivalent to a 5' x 8' coop... for more chickens, you'll need more space!

Don't you know........chicks don't count as chickens?

If you find out later you have roosters in the bunch and you get rid of them, you're just going to go get more babies, then you're going to use twice the electricity to fire up the heat lamp again.

Just save yourself some money, and go get those chicks!

I think as soon as DH is awake (he had to work last night) that we are off to TSC to get those pullets lol

We are in Roanoke by the way.

AND our neighbors that we have dont mind them but we dont have ANY roosters lol

As far as the coop goes we are buying a camper to convert into a coop lol And we have an area about 20 feet long, 12 ft deep and 18 foot across fenced in already that we are going to fence higher and put a mesh on the top of for their chicken yard!

Really? So they are like an orpington egg then? I hope so as they are our favorites here lol

We have a buff rock, 2 buff orps and a silver spangled hamburg. I didnt know when we got them that the SSH produced such a tiny lil white egg, it reminds me of a bantam sized egg, but my 4yr old will not let ANYONE but her eat those eggs as that is HER chicken lol

I don't think you'd have any trouble selling the extra hens. I'd go for it!

In areas where you can only have a limited number of hens, there are always people looking for a few hens. They don't want to have to order 15 or 25, just to keep 3 or 4. Not everyone wants to raise chicks in the brooder, either. Those people love to find older chicks.

Haha! should be studying but cant get off chick site!

Tell the 4 yo that it will taste better than the eggs and since it's HER chicken she should be able to eat it Lol! and about extra chicks I am thinking of getting some Bantams and I only have room for four Standards and have 6 on order TSC is soooo close! I WILL fight my addiction!
