Opossum - A Deadly Threat

I agree relocating them might not be legal in a governmental sense, but morally I cant shoot them any longer. They might become a problem to someone else once relocated, or they might find balance with nature in their new location. I release mine within a half mile of a huge lake, sometimes I release them at the lake. Id like to think this environment gives them a better chance of survival in a new home

Mamma Hen, your birds are beyond lucky that this worked out so well! If some predator can get in to the coop, it's never good. Hope your injured birds recover, and that you've fixed your coop issues. And never turn off that electric fencing!
Here in Michigan, a trapped varmit can be released on your same property, or on private land within the same county, with landowner's permission. Nowhere else!!!
Relocated critters have a very hard time in an new territory, patrolled by local animals, and having no idea where good places are. The critter will likely try to get home, and might succeed, or die trying. And they are trap wise, and love chicken.
Only trap if you will then shoot! Or hire a pest control company to deal with things.
Opossums carry a parasite that causes severe illness and often death in horses, so anyone owning horses will have a very dim view of any possum anywhere near the barn or hay. One of our horses had EPM because of this, and after treatments, lived, but miscarried, and was disabled for the rest of her life.
Opossums are welcome to live out there, NOT near the barn or coop!

Yes. I am thinking the next one I catch I will call a friend to dispatch. I don't want them breeding and if they grow this big out here they would really damage someone's car. It seems they love to walk the roads. We have enough problems dodging deer.
