opossum spotted outside the run this morning, chickens nervous tonight

HeatherLynn,

I have a had a similar problem with respect to oppossums. Oppossum but no firearm. Most of our oppossum visitations promoted by uneaten chicken feed but occasionally chickens were the reason.

You could provide more than enough food for oppossum to consume but run risk of bringing more critters in. I have done that when I know I will not have time sit out with gun. I also have the live traps which are very effective against oppossums but disposal of catch is a problem without a gun. For most folks it is not legal to release them elsewhere.

For me the most practical method for dealing with oppossums is to catch them by hand. Caught three in last two months. Grab by tail, not other end and dispatch with crushing blow to back of head using something like a tire iron or ax. I use my foot. Be carefull of toothy end. Otherwise oppossums, even when in good health are easy to handle. Be prepared for a brief chase.

Learn to use it...we like to shoot sporting clays in our back yard.

You can live trap and relocate....till you get tired and they come back.
Or you can practice good o'l .................S.S.S..................................

Good Luck
