Orange Mottled Chicken!

Just thought I'd mention this... someone is auctioning Swedish Flower Hen hatching eggs... only 3 hours left to go!

https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=595174

I don't have an incubator...and I think our hens are prettier, actually. But I bet these guys could help out with the size.

On a sad note, my pretty little Aloha pullet, favorite of the 25 I got last spring, Is missing and presumed dead. Despite having her wing clipped, Miss Blackbeak somehow made it into the yard with our Stupid dog (who had been so good recently!) and all I found of her were some feathers. Not nearly enough to indicate she was killed, but it has been almost a week and she has not returned from wherever she went. We searched the whole yard and found another pullet (one of my sussex) who was also injured by the dumb dog (she is now recovering nicely and will be released from solitary soon) but no Blackbeak.
I am trying to take comfort in knowing that the rooster I might be picking up on Sunday will be a huge help to MaBo and I (especially with the little pullets like Sprinkles who is very pretty but TINY) but I still miss my chicken.

My son had a chicken show up after being missing for three weeks. Maybe there's still hope.

Here's a few pics of my new Buff Rock roo! Big thanks to Tam'ra for the amazing job finding him, and picking him up for me while on a trip to Washington.

He's supposedly about 6 months old, and not crowing yet. But already similar size (or perhaps larger) than my NHR/RIR roo. I think he'll do well for bringing in some good size, coloring, and laying qualities to the Aloha's.

Looks like he's getting along with everyone pretty well. That's good. I hope he'll be helpful.

And yes, I know there might be some SLIGHT chance my missing pullet will return (I had a Polish vanish for a week and one of my neighbors found her and brought her back) but I worry that even if she is wandering around somewhere, she won't want to come back home with that stupid dog of ours in the yard. Several of my neighbors have small flocks so I bet she moved in with someone else...

That picture might be a bit misleading

. It was moments before my NHR roo chased him away. Then, this afternoon he somehow hopped the fence, and then I saw little Xerxes chasing him. So I guess it's the usual 'bully the new guy' antics.

Good thought about your lost Aloha hen possibly joining a neighbor's flock. Maybe you ought to check around with them. If I were in their shoes, I might not be in a huge hurry to find her true owner, considering how pretty and unique she is!

Tamra - sorry to hear about Blackbeak! It is just the worst feeling to lose an adult hen. Especially with the Alohas, because each one really is one of a kind. That's why I'm always in such a hurry to hatch out the next generation, because I'm terrified that I won't get chicks from a certain hen before something happens. It seems no matter how careful you are, chickens can be so fragile.

Wonderful news here . . . earlier in this thread, I showed photos of "Cheeto" my MONSTER sized 1/4 Aloha, 1/4 NHR, 1/2 Buff Rock rooster. He's a massive guy, bred to add some major size improvement to the flock.

I suspected he might be a carrier of the Mottled gene, due to one little tiny white fleck on one single feather. Even though the odds were slim, only 25% chance of him having it. Anyway, one of my Aloha hens snuck off about six weeks ago, and hatched out four chicks. They are about three weeks old now. I'm pretty sure that "Cheeto" was the only rooster big enough to do the deed. All four chicks were born bright gold! Looked like his chicks! Funny thing, though - now they are feather out and three of the four seem to be MOTTLED!!!

I'm waiting for them to feather out a little bit more, and then I'll take photos to share on here. Maybe a week at most. SO exciting!!! If these are Cheeto's kids, they should be normal sized, and so far, there is LOTS and LOTS of color on these babies!!!

Anyway, will update with pics of Cheeto's babies soon. Have an incubator full of eggs now, some chicks by Cheeto and others from a seperate breeding pen. That other pen has a pure Sussex roo with half Aloha, half Buff Orp hens. The hens are solid gold color and larger, but should carry the mottled gene. It will be interesting to see if we get colored babies there, too? 19 developing eggs due on Monday, and eight more eggs due the 25th. Babies - YAY!

Oh, I will be tracking the development of these chicks through colored leg bands. I talked to a seller on Ebay, and asked if she could set me up with leg bands in all sizes, from birth to adult, all the the same colors. So that I could, for example, band one chick with a red leg band, and keep moving up in size all the way to adulthood, to see how the colors change as it grows. She set up a "Buy It Now" listing if anyone else is interested:

The sizes are 4-12, which would take from small baby chicks up to adult Buff Orpingtons, which is good, since some of these chicks will have small moms and giant Cheeto as the daddy, who knows how big they will end up being as adults? Ha ha!
