Hi I'm christy and I just placed an order for 7 hens at mpc. I am hoping to get
1 black australorp
1 barred Plymouth rock
2 buff orpington
2 easter Eggers
1 rhode island red.
They should get here end of october and in the mean time I'm working on the coop. I have a large dog kennel and an old plastic child's playhouse I'm going to try to refurbish. I'm sure I'll have questions so thanks in advance.

Thanks I wanted to be able to tell them apart. And I wanted breeds that would make sweet pets too.

Welcome to the BYC flock! We are glad you joined us!

The type of coop you need depends qreatly on the number of birds you plan to have and what your climate is like. You can check out the coops section - many styles, many sizes, many types ie., moveable coops called tractors, etc.

If you live in an area of very inclement weather - your birds may stay in the coop for lengthy periods, crowded chickens can start feather pulling, bullying and escalate into cannibalism. They aren't as innocent as they seem. Rule of thumb is 4-5 sq.feet per bird in the coop not counting roosts and nesting boxes. The outdoor run should allow 10 sq. feet per bird. But, bigger is always better, especially when chicken addiction sets in. Better to build larger at the start than keep adding additions or building extra

It is also a great idea to post on your state thread and find out what breeds do best in your climate and what you need to get them through temperature ranges.

PS It would really be better if you ordered 2 of each breed - you may have losses in shipment or during the first few days (fairly common). It always seems to be the breed you most wanted.

Welcome. That is excellent advice. I wanted to expand my flock with different colored egg layers so ordered 6 different breeds but three I ordered only one of each. I had two DOA and both were with peeps which were the only ones of that breed, and unfortunately I was unable to replace them.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I'm from Texas around the austin area so weather is usually ok except for the hot summer. I'm now looking into building a coop. I already placed the order...I originally only wanted 5 or 6 but the minimum was 7 so that how I got that number. The buff is the one I really want so I did get two of those. They should get tons of ventilation since I plan to the the coop open to the run most of the time. I'm in the process of checking craigslist for wood to reclaim :)
