And, Welcome to the BYC community! There are some awesome folks around this site! But, a word of caution: chicken ownership is addictive!! I wanted 6. I now have 29 hens, 1 main rooster, 4 up an coming roosters, two recent hatches in brooders and eggs going in the incubator tomorrow morning!!

Hahaha! I ended up with more roosters than I meant to, so I was all I WILL JUST GET MORE CHICKENS. Addictive, indeed!

thank you! I plan on starting with four, we'll see how it goes lol

I can almost guarantee I'll end up with more!

Welcome. I have ordered chicks from My Pet Chicken. They will ship small orders. Depending on where you live your minimum order (They have a questionnaire on their wesite to set what your number is) can be as low as three or higher. If it is more than you want, perhaps you can find someone to split an order with you. The larger the order the better the chicks seem to do.
A local breeder or feed store may also work for you. O have gotten from all three sources plus buying shipped eggs.
Good luck.

Yes, local breeders are my favorite source. I have, though, also hatched quite a few shipped eggs with varying results because I can't get the birds I want locally. The Speckled Sussex I referenced earlier that came from a hatchery are a very odd color assortment - not that I expected Standard of Perfection - but almost snowy white??? That order kind of made me hatchery-leery. That said, most hatcheries are very good resources for back yard flocks, and they generally give a lot of support for first-time chicken owners! And, all your pullets will (eventually) lay eggs, regardless of their origins!
