Ordering chicks

We're going to split an order of 25 chicks with another friend who wants to add more to their flock. Personally, I'm relieved...I had no idea what we were going to do with 25 baby chicks!

Why not see if you can find someone to go in on an order? We got lucky and found someone, but I do understand it might be hard to find someone nearby!

I used My Pet Chicken to order the bantams I wanted. I can only have hens no roosters. I ended up with all hens. They are all healthy. And I didn't have to cull or find homes for any roosters. I don't think I could order from a place that is going to send "disposable" packing peanuts that breathe. I am happy to spend what ever extra to get what I want and only what I want. The heating pad things are for me the better way to go.

The large hens I got from a feed store about 40 miles away. Ended up with 3 roosters, two went to someone on craigs list and the other one I had to put down ( kill) It was very very sad. They were all supposed to be pullets.

My silkie went broody during the winter, if she would repeat herself, I would order 3 chicks from MPC and put them under her at night. But no luck so far with that. Maybe soon, I hope.

We have ordered from Ideal twice, only having to wait for my current order an extra month. They said it was because the first hatch of the "season" was not successful. I really want the salmon favorelles, so I am waiting the extra month. Hopefully I won't end up needing to cancel and look elsewhere as well. So far the customer service has been excellent.
My cousin ordered from McMurray without huge shipping fees, but I believe they had to order 25. They solved this by ordering a meat and egg package and processing the meat birds at around 8 weeks. Not for me at this point.

I guess I'm spoiled by my Grange Co-op. I ordered the chicks I wanted--five BR and three GLW and five meaties. The meaties were 1.69 each, the BR 1.99 and the GLW 3.59 (hence only getting three lol). They came in on Wed, I picked them up Friday afternoon, we're good to go! They had a pretty good variety to choose from, too.

I have had great success with Ideal, ordering about 60 chicks and a handful of ducklings. I have had only a single loss in three shipments and she was awful tiny to start with. They do have a minimum order but I usually find a neighbor to order a few chicks with me. The quality of the birds is fairly good, I set my expectations and love their d'Uccle bantams. The shipping seemed quite fair and from Texas to New Hampshire is a good distance to travel for little ones. The small box, grow gel and packing keeps them comfortable.
