When ordering straight run chicks is there a good guess to what ratio of male to female I should be looking for.
The cost of day old chicks of 25 or more is way cheaper than a small order. What do you do in this situation? John

Well supposedly with straight run you're supposed to get 50/50, but I don't think it usually comes out that way. I'd count on more roos than pullets.

if you have the room order the 25 straight run and butcher and freeze the roos.
but its a matter of personal choice which way you go. good luck

The hen/roo ratio is just a luck of the draw thing.

I ordered 5 each of 6 different breeds last year, all st run, and this is what I got
(I got 1 extra in 4 of the breeds)

6 BR....2 died, 1 roo
6 Polish.....3 roos
5 JG......2 roos
6 Japanese......4 roos
5 sebrights......1 pullet died, 2 roos
6 cochins.......2 roos

Out of 31 chicks, I got 14 roosters.

Should be 50/50... but I've had hatches that were way off from that 50 50 mark... and there's no choosing in eggs!

Go with 25, and then just freeze up the roos. Should end up with about a good dozen hens.
