so looking at Ideal and McMurray's websites, you can only order straight run bantam chicks. So if we're lucky we end up with a 50/50 split.

in an ideal situation I would like to get 6 pullets, so if I ordered 12 chicks what do I do with the 6 roos? Keeping one roo might be an option, but I am not planning on building a coop to hold 12 chickens

How long does it take before you can sex them?

PS - first post, I'm trying to do my research before diving into this whole backyard chicken raising

Check out MyPetChicken.com - you can order smaller amounts and I *believe* they offer sexed bantams.

depends on breed and coloration....some are fairly easy others...like silkies will have folks arguing almost until they lay an egg! (exageration folks) Anyways...w/o experience it takes some time but post pics and we try and help...

6 is your plan

...we will change that...if you build it...you will soon realize it should have been larger

that is true about my pet chicken but even they aren't 100% so plan on a roo

You can try to craigslist the roos but it's honestly hard to get rid of roos in some areas, especially bantams. Not worth butchering, you know? As for when to sex, it's going to depend on the breed. You're looking at a minimum of 3 weeks old for most, and up to 3 months old for some. And then, of course, there are silkies LOL.
