I just got my first batch of meaties (Vantress X) and was told that I should feed them a high energy broiler ration of 23% for 4 weeks, and that if I gave them regular starter "it would be like putting them on a diet." I really want to give them organic feed, but I am having a very hard time finding an organic broiler starter. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I should look? Thanks!

from Newaygo MI!
I also have vantress x and I feed them purina Flock raiser. I don't know if it is organic? When they were 2 weeks old I started feeding 12 hours on then 12 hours off and they are now 8 weeks old and very huge! Good luck with yours.
You might want to ask in the Michigan thread, someone else there might know a place to get organic feed. https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=233&p=2476

Please
check the link in my siggy for the upcoming Michigan chickenstock.

Hi all, I'm in Michigan too. Just outside of Muskegon. I got 11 meat birds from TSC and I think they are the Vantress birds because when I was asking about feed for them they told me the same thing that the chick starter was like putting them on a diet, so I have been mixing the chick starter with the 24percent and seem to be having pretting good luck with it. mine are 5 weeks old now.

Here's a thread that has one place listed in Michigan. Where I live, I had a very hard time finding organic chicken feed. If you look hard enough, you will find it. I finally found a co-op that sells organic feeds. Call around to mills and other places and organic stores if this place doesn't work for you. Someone will know or you'll find it somewhere. Good luck.

I just found a local farmer in Brown City that mixes his own organic feed.

He as chick starter, grower 20% and layer 17%. $17 for 50 lbs.

Ingredients - "Our typical blend is open pollinated corn, oats, spelt, roasted soybean, kelp, calcium and poultry mineral mix. it is blended in a hammer mill/mixer, coarse for larger birds, and finely ground for chicks. All whole grain, minimal processing."

I just started feeding it to my chickens and they love it.

Nope, not your co-worker:) I live in the thumb, near Brown City.

One of my coworkers raises grass fed beef and is getting into chickens so I just wanted to see if she finally joined.

Good luck with your venture!

I buy mine from Family Farm & Home on Plainfield in Grand Rapids; they carry Grahams. Grahams, out of Rosebush on the east side of the state, is an organic farm and mill and sells all kinds of good organic feeds. Here is their website >>>> http://www.grahamsorganics.com/

I assume that it would be costly to order yourself directly and I've long wanted to find other people here in West Michigan to group up and buy in bulk. Anyone out there interested?

Thanks! I called one place in Michigan, which is only about 20 miles from me, and they have what I need. Good prices for organic, too.
