Organic feed or non GMO conventional feed or ?fermented feed? in CT

Hi I'm new from southeastern connecticut and have posted an introduction post in the appropriate forum
Someone told me that this was the place to ask questions about feed sources in Connecticut. We had wanted to use Green Mountain non GMO conventional layer pellets but it appears they are not available in my area. Does anyone know of a source for these or is there a co-op or any other way to get organce feed at a price lower than .60 per pound. Never raised or bought food for chickens before so i'm totally in the dark on this. Also someone talked about fermented feed but I'm not sure what that is or where you would get it or the cost. Oh yeah, and what about scratch feed? Organic available? Is scratch neccesary. Thanks so much

Scratch is not necessary IMO, but lots of people feed it. Their primary food contains the balanced nutrients they need and that should be their main diet. Yes you can get it organic. I order my feed on-line and it costs a fortune. Fermented feed you make yourself. I just have a few birds so I make mine in a soup tureen. I just take some feed, cover it with water and add a glug of apple cider vinegar with the mother. Stir it every day and in as little as a day or two, or more, you'll have fermented feed. I would do a search on this site. There are experts on FF here ( I am not one of them) and there's lots of information. You might also search sources of organic feed. There's info on that as well.

Thank you silkienation. I found some of the non GMO feed. I submitted a post, but it is in Manchester CT at CCC feeds at around $20.00 per 50 pound bag. I guess I'm going to go with that for now, but i will research the fermented foods. Thanks

A bit of a delayed response here - I am paying $37 for 25lbs! Scratch N Peck! I have to store it really well as my little flock doesn't eat it up that fast. Glad you found something.

Hi guys. I live in SE CT too and buy Green Mountain organic feed at the Westerly RI Agway. They typically stock it but if you are planning to make the trip you might want to call ahead to be sure they have it. Also, Salem Feed and Grain will get it for you but you must pay ahead. I think they get it in once a week. Check out the Green Mt site, they have both soy free and soy based versions. I buy the soy containing grower feed and supplement with free choice calcium. They lay better with the soy based feed and my girls feathers always look great even when moulting. My girls don't free range, just get let out of the run every other day or so for an hour before sunset. They do of course get veggie scraps and garden leftovers.

I might try that sometime. With the few birds I have, I really don't go through that much feed though. In fact I end up throwing some out because I worry about freshness.

Have you been happy with the feed you got from CCC? I was looking into them the other day but their website would not load. Is it a whole grain feed or crumbles?
