I have been feeding my chickens New Country Organics grower. They will be laying soon and I am trying to decide what feed to go with. I was going to continue with New Country Organics layer. I want to keep organic. My chickens free range 90% of the time. I have been wondering if a higher protein flock raise with oyster shell free choice would be better for them. I just can't seem to find an organic, non-GMO flock raiser. Are their any big brands that carry it? Does anyone know of any local brands in Connecticut? Is their a down side to using flock raiser as their primary feed?

If your grower is non medicated you can continue to feed that, or switch to an all flock when and if you find one. My flock is 100% free range, layer wasn't enough protein, my birds are doing much better since I switched. Most chickens continue to grow past the first year and require extra protein, switching to layer too soon can cause troubles. Always provide oyster shells in a separate dish free choice.

Thanks for the responses. I have had my "ah ha!" moment. The suggestion to keep them on the grower sounded intriguing to me. Then it was stated that Blue Seal carries a flock raiser that they call start/broiler. Then I put 2 and 2 together and realized that the grower I am using is referred to as starter/broiler on the label. So, I guess I can keep them on it with oyster shell free choice.

Thanks!
