I like organic, but feed is more than double what conventional costs and I'm not convinced it's as good. Thus to me conventional is the way to go.

I am not willing to foot the bill for the added cost of organic feed, as I don't feel it is nescessarily any better for either the birds or myself - just my opinion of course.

It's a little more pricey to go organic but I'm going that route and have found some ways to reduce the cost difference. I found a small farm 'locally' (about 70 miles away) that grows, mills and sells organic feed here in Michigan. It's not 'certified' but I have gotten to know the farmers and trust their organic claim. It's $18-20 per 50# bag which is comparable to non-organic feed. I just buy in bulk whenever I make the trip. I also don't use chemicals in my lawn so I let my birds free range as much as possible. If they get a couple (2-5) hours ranging a day I've noticed my feed consumption going down 30-50%. I also throw garden extras & grass clippings in the run for them to devour which cuts feed consumption as well.

GMO crops in US
There are different studies that contradict each other about GMOs. I tend to be distrustful of the ones that are more likely to have an association with big ag ompanies that benefit from the GM crops, and sadly this now includes universities. The real life unexpected deaths of animals eating GM crops, the negative effect on reproduction, and the growth problems have more weight for me than studies from universities that get funding from big ag. A study did find that modified strands of DNA survived digestion intact and were absorbed by the digestive tract. The strands were found to make through cell walls and incorporate into the animal DNA. Out of fairness, other studies did not show this phenomenon. Like I said, though: it does matter who did the study, and it explain the real life effects being observed.
So I dont know how concerned anyone is over GMO crops, but here is a list and the site it came from at the bottom:

It’s virtually impossible to provide a complete list of genetically modified food (GM food) in the United States because there aren’t any laws for genetically modified crops!
Some estimates say as many as 30,000 different products on grocery store shelves are "modified." That's largely because many processed foods contain soy. Half of North America's soy crop is genetically engineered!

Tomatoes - Made for a longer shelf life and to prevent a substance that causes tomatoes to rot and degrade.
