Three weeks ago I got "ornamental layers" from MM. The only ones I can id are the two polish variety(not shown) - the others I don't know. I would appreciate any help with identification. Thanks so much and here we go

these gals I have three of. They stand upright more than the others.
Thanks,

Hi Mike! I am not sure about the little one in the middle picture, but I do know what the first two and the last three are. I got both of these breeds from MM a couple of months ago.

The first two chicks are Derbyshire Red Caps and the lovely leggy chicks are Egyptian Fayoumis. I am really enjoying both of these breeds.

The RC's will grow a large, red, flat & gnarly looking comb. The EF's seem to retain a bit of a wild look to them. Both are very friendly. My EF roosters began crowing at about 6 weeks! It was a rather warbly, reedy kind of crow, but very discernible!

Let me run outside and take a couple of pictures and you can see what they will look like in another month or so!

Okay, here you go....

The Red Caps seem to be at the awkward stage-they're not cute little chicks any more, but they've not quite got their adult feathering either. And it is still hard to tell which are the three cockerels.

Both of these breeds are fairly rare. I tried and tried to find hatching eggs to incubate for both types and no one had them. So I ordered early from MM, (waited too long last year and they were sold out). I am really pleased with the birds I got. All are very healthy and have done fine.

I hope you are happy with yours!

They are beautiful. So at some point the red heads are al going to go white? This is going to be so fun to watch. Thanks so much

How bout these?

At first I thought I had 5 of them, and only last night I noticed the very different leg color so now I think I have three of the above with the greener legs and two of the below . . .

These five look similar to me except for the legs.

Thanks agian.

You know, I am just not sure about the gray chicks with the chipmunk marked faces. You are probably right about the differences in leg coloring meaning they are different types of chicks. It is amazing how similar they can look as baby chicks and how much they change as they grow.

For the first few weeks I was absolutely sure that my Red Cap babies were the Fayoumi's and the Fayoumi's were the Red Caps.....until my son pointed out that the ones with the red heads......hence my thinking they must be the Red Caps.....did not have rose combs....and so they had to be the EF's. He was right.....and as a mom, you know how much I hated that. LOL

The Red Cap pullets will change even more as they grow and have more of a golden laced look to their feathers, as opposed to the all dark brown coloring.

The Fayoumi juveniles have nice dark legs now, but they were a lot lighter when they were chicks.

Here are a couple of links you might find interesting where you can see both grown birds and what the chicks look like:

Looks like there is only a chick description for this breed and no picture.

You will have to posted updated pictures of the gray chicks in a few weeks so we can see how much they have changed.

Eventually, you WILL know what they are....LOL.....frustrating isn't it!

Good Luck with your babies,

Deb

I'm not for certain, but looking at the pics in your first post, I think the little one who's buddy didn't make it, that chick kind of looks like a Blue Jersey Giant, though I do believe the leg coloring is off. It's the face mask that makes me think Giant, but I don't know if they'd be in an Ornamental Layer order. Sorry I can't be of more help.
