Problem with my phobia is fire is dangerous, so I have to keep my distance. But I'd be happy if I can watch a fire, especially a big one, without panicking. And one day I may be able to build and light one
My DH doesn't understand either, but he's very supportive. Whenever there's something on TV he thinks will upset me, he'll tell me to stay in the kitchen until he gives me the clear, for example. A big hurdle for me was to not freak when I burn myself and to use our gas stove. I got used to the stove and progressed to lighting the thing, but gas geysers (water heaters) still spook me. They are scary things. Well, to me anyway.
A thing I really hate is when people make a point of telling me things, knowing it'll upset me. Like one guy who told me all about his neighbour setting fire to himself. I don't want to know!!!
Anyway, don't know if it'll make you feel better, but I know this big, macho alpha male type guy who's absolutely terrified of ... frogs. At least chickens can get scary. Like aggressive roosters. I got flogged by one when I was a child. I'll never forget it.
