we recently found 2 young hens foraging in our backyard and determined they bantam Sebright or similar. it appears they were abandoned by a nearby neighbor who has been raising chickens. what is a proper diet for these birds - any suggestions ???

Layers pellets if you are looking to get eggs from them.
Just go into your local feed store and ask for it. They'll be sure to stock it.
Plenty of water as well.
Do you have an enclosure for them?
Of you have photos of them that would help us decide the best food for them.

no suitable pen, but they like an unused greenhouse I have and roost in my lilac bush at night

Welcome, and congratulations on your hens!

They will need a better place to roost, though I wish I could sleep in a lilac bush when it's in bloom! Predators will easily get them in there. I would think even the greenhouse would be more secure until you can get a proper coop.
