My marans are super friendly once they start laying. My barred rocks have always been the friendliest, hands down. I only have one left, because they also were super bossy to the other chickens, and she is the coolest hen. She comes RUNNING whenever she sees you, is always around, yet totally respectful of space, too.

I think what bird each owner connects with varies. I love all my birds and own three breeds Golden Buffs, Barred Rock, and Speckled Sussex. The Sussex is my friendliest breed. Always comes to greet, lets me pick her up and such a songster. Fits with the breed which is curious and social.

It’s such a common thread that speckled Sussex are so awesome... I have a 2 week old speckled Sussex chick that is the most outgoing and awesome chick I’ve had. Hoping it’s the breed and she isn’t a he!

To the OP... I only have 1 buff Orpington and haven’t ever had them before. She just started laying and personality wise she is docile but flighty if that makes sense. She doesn’t mind being handled, but you have to corner her to catch her. Maybe the best description for her is she is cautious and lacks confidence. (Not the worst traits since mine free range daily).

Well, I’ve only had ten birds, all different breeds, all hatchery stock. But I will tell you my Buff Orpington is indeed one of my sweetest hens. Not low in the pecking order, like you hear about. She’s in the middle and oh so pretty. I love that, even with her pretty fluffy feathers and dainty feminine face, she has a deep voice. As a young pullet, I feared she might turn out to be a rooster, as her voice was markedly deeper than everyone else’s. I really don’t think you would regret or could go wrong with Orpingtons. Good luck!!

Edited to add: all my girls will sit at least briefly on my lap, but she is one of my top few lap sitters. She even got in my sister’s lap once when she visited.
