Hello all!

I have one bird who is unwell. None of the other chickens are showing any signs of distress or sickness. This little birdie is about 30 weeks old. They are all free-range. She recently started to lay 3-4 weeks ago.
She's the smaller of my orpingtons, but still a good weight. I haven't been able to weigh her, but picking her up yesterday she seems in the range of 9-12 lbs.
I noticed this three days ago. She was sitting, under some brush, away from all the other birds.
I checked back midday, she had moved, but she was resting under the vehicles. All three times, when being fed and given treats, she showed no interest.

Yesterday, I went out and looked her over. Her tail and wings are drooped, she has no energy, and she's constantly trying to sleep. She tried to perch earlier in the day, before I brought her in, and could not make the jump to get up, which is something she can otherwise make.

Again, none of the other birds are showing any symptoms. I was able to easily get the bird, which is uncharacteristic of my girls. She put up no fight. She's been in the house since yesterday night. She hasn't moved from where I put her.

She is drinking, I've given her electrolyte water with vitamins and her food soaked in water. She does eat a little of the mash I've given her.

She does have diarrhea. I did check her to see if she were egg bound, but I couldn't feel anything, so I haven't ruled that entirely out. She's been soaked and fed calcium carbonate, just in case. That was our first guess.

Does anyone have any ideas?
She's droopy, sleepy, will eat and drink a little - but only if it's right in front of her.
It looks like she has labored breathing, sometimes. Beak open, sort of whole body moving. This comes and goes.
She won't move.
Has diarrhea.
No sneezing, discharge anywhere. Her vent is clean. I don't see any mites, but I will be re-checking her over shortly.

Very sorry to hear that. Quarantine is a very good idea, as are electrolytes as long as she has diarrhea. We've had good luck with Nutri-Drench keeping birds as healthy as possible when they are not eating as much.

Unfortunately I can't offer any guesses as to what is going on. Hopefully someone else will soon. But in the mean time, are you in the US or Canada?

I have found contacting the local county's extension office to be very helpful. You can ask if there are any known illnesses in the area that are likely to affect chickens her age. The extension office can usually make poultry veterinarian recommendations, too.

Sorry I can't be of more help. Good luck!
