I bought Orpingtons for a good dual-purpose chicken and I was wondering if anyone has done the same. I'm new to all of this and really would like advice about when the average age is to butcher an orpington?

Thanks!!

A BO at 16 wks is still a little thin with a small breast, they are just a bit to slow growing for me, I have had several.

I can't say I am raising mine just for eating. For eatin birds, those Cornish mixes grow to like 8 or 9 lbs within 4 months. I agree BO's are not the first choice for meat birds. There are other breeds that are more efficient to raise for eating. IF that is the hand you've been dealth, and you have no plans of eggs production, then eat them. But, IF eating eggs is also an interest, keep the BO's and get some true meat birds. You will be eatin more bird for less to feed them.
