Hoping one of you chicken whisperers can help!
We have nine girls-- four older/five younger-- usually we get 5-6 eggs a day (older girls are not regular layers). They've gotten along fine since the younger girls were big enough to fend for themselves... about a year ago.
In the past two weeks, one of our Rhode Island Reds (we THINK one of the older ones) has been going into the upstairs part of our coop where the laying boxes are. She's not broody and sitting in the box, but just hanging out-- standing on the floor or a perch. Our egg production is WAY down (0-3 eggs a day) and she seems to be annoying/intimidating the girls that go up there to lay.
We've put her "solitary chicken confinement" in our rabbit hutch (no rabbits!) and taken her out of the coop for days on end, but when we put her back in, she runs back upstairs!
We have friends who might be willing to adopt her into their flock, but we don't want her to cause the same problem there.... We want eggs and happy chickens!
Does anyone have similar experiences or suggestions?
