I moved to Ottawa a few years back and have wanted to start my own backyard flow ever since.
Where i grew up everyone had a backyard flow, the city even promoted backyard chickens as a way to live sustainably. You could buy birds and livestock at the local market. Backyard birds was the norm.
But here in Ottawa it's another story! No chickens, no poultry, no game birds, no fun!!
It is very illegal to have poultry of any kind within city limits. The exceptions are the experimental farm (which is owned and operated by the federal government), Carleton University, University of Ottawa, and a few other non-residential places. Basically if people live there, you can't have poultry.

HOWEVER... there is an underground community that is constantly growing! There are two facebook groups in Ottawa for chickens and poultry buy and sell. There is also a huge push for changes to these bylaws within the Ottawa community. The facebook groups are: Backyard Chickens Ottawa, and Poultry Gone Wild Ottawa Valley Buy/Sell/Trade.

I have attached a PDF of the ottawa animal bylaws. #74 talks about birds. And section B lists forbidden animals.
