Our 2 roosters pecked a hole in our Ameraucanas' head

If they can use that run space when the weather is at it's worst, that makes difference than if they were confined to coop alone.

It's more about space available, number of chickens, climate, personality of flock..than hard numbers.
There are many variables and no one number will fit all situations...rules of thumb are given but observation and experience is the true measuring stick.

There's an excellent article linked in my signature about how much space chickens need...check it out.

Thank you and I will read the article. They have gotten along for the past year and seem comfortBle and happy. We had a visit from the Extension Agency poultry specialist on the fall. He remarked upon how healthy and happy they looked. I hope I can integrate her back in with just the 1 rooster, but if not he'll be gone too.

A good rooster: Dances for his ladies, tid-bits his ladies, and sees to it that they eat before he does. He shows them nice nesting spots. He accompanies them to/from the nest. He rounds them up at bed time. He is not at all aggressive to chicks. He is not human aggressive. He warns of predators, and will chase off some predators. But, you can't expect him to keep all predators at bay.

What if he does all of that, but injures some of the hens in the mating process? Two apparent favorites have bare backs and one an injured head.
