Maybe. They do chew on things so you would want to use metal hardware cloth for the sides.

OP- love your aviary and coop.
Is that a storage container at one end of your coop?
How many hens are in your coop?
We're just getting our plans started for our coop and run but I like the idea of the aviary and wonder if there are small birds that will cohabitate well with laying hens and silkies.

Actually at one end of the coop we have two small trash cans that we store feed in. One has chicken feed and the other has Mazuri Waterfowl feed in it. Both cans have their own scoops and under the coop we have a dust bath for the chickens that contains a mixture of potting soil, sand, and diatomaceous earth. Everything is still a work in progress.

Also..the chickens are never in our aviery. That is strictly for the mandarin ducks. Right now we have 7 hens that are in our group and we have a final three that we are going to introduce later that arent quite up to size yet to put with the others. The ones in the coop now are a Light Brahma, Rhode Island Red, Americauna, Australorp, White Cochin, and two Blue Laced Red Wyandottes. One of the Wyandottes is a splash and the other a blue. The other three that will be joining the group later are a Lavander Americauna, Silver Laced Wyandotte and a Plymouth Rock.

I was thinking along the lines of another poster who mentioned parakeets, I believe. I wonder what birds out there might do well with chickens, if any. After seeing your post I just got this wild idea that it might be cool to have a aviary with a door for the chickens to use for entering and exiting back into their run/coop. Chickens do live amongst other birds if completely free range so why couldn't one have small birds as well as chickens? I haven't told hubby about this idea yet so, shhhhhhh.

He'll be thrilled to hear I've already got plans for modifying the coop he hasn't even built yet.
Maybe I should start a thread about this. lol

I like where you put your dust bath. I contemplated the dust bath under the coop for a while and then realized what I was looking at. I like the placement.
