About a month ago all five of our chickens got through a hole/missing slat in the one part of our fence that is wood (rest is chainlink or hogwire so doesn't deteriorate as much). I managed to lure 4 of them back with food but the last one, my beloved idiot Mysti, had gone around the neighbors half fence into another neighbors yard and couldn't figure out how to get back. Which involved us driving to the other side of the block, mildly trespassing into the neighbors yard because it was the middle of a weekday and nobody was home, and tossing her back over our fence. They've been in quarantine in their (large) run since because I knew they'd be laying soon, they just turned 6 months old, and I wanted them to learn to start using the nest boxes and not go under the deck to lay; and of course because we needed to fix the fence. So, they started laying this week!!! And so yesterday we fixed the fence so they could be free to roam again.
Of course today I let them out awhile ago. We have a whole fully fenced acre. Wrought iron gate on the driveway. I'm standing in the kitchen filling up a glass of water and I am watching 2 chickens at the gate.... And as I start to think "Are those holes on the bottom big enough for a chicken...?" Sure enough, they slipped right through. OMG. So I dash out and lure them all back into their run so they are back in the slammer until I get some wire over the bottom length of our gate. Why is our grassy acre not enough for you spoiled birds?!
I thought for sure my Blue Heeler would be the one to point out all the issues in our fence when we moved into this house, but I guess she has handed her legacy over to the hens for now!
