Our chickens as of 2025

Current status:

Raising 21 pullets and 8 ducks. Here are some pictures of them. My phone is already running out of space for more lmao

When the colder months approach, the bigger coop will be finished. Trust. Anyway 40+ birds shit so much, I think we are cleaning daily oml 😭

Ducks grow SO FAST?! Mfw did the runner duck grew feathers(it was all downy before) and got taller in 5 days.

IMG_2526.jpeg

One grew a blue feather I think but the rest show no difference though. Two 11 weeks old, Three 5+ weeks old, and the runner duck I am thinking ~2 weeks old...?

Surprisingly adapted and got bold already. Willing to rush between rooster and hens to eat from feeder. Seems to not be scared of nothing except maybe me getting a bit too close lol, but I am impressed. It had only been 5 days and they are already eating and drinking casually(and sleep everywhere and anywhere)

On another side though. New pullets still not adapted. Still pretty skittish(to other hens) but not scared of me at least. The older hens were the opposite lol. Very bold to chickens but so scared of me XD
Unfortunately the four 16 weeks old is much smaller than the others and bullied and barely ate so I put them in cages so they’ll eat more.
Anyway misc images at the bottom. The new chickens are so pretty honestly. Didn’t take pics of them all but I was enamored at the iridescent and the colors of the pullets’ feathers.

Beautiful photos and birds! ❤️
Thank you! I hope to keep the new birds’ feathers as pretty for as long as possible, but they’re already getting pecked out and dulled 🥹

They unfortunately wouldn’t be fed pure high protein feed and dustbathed with clean dirt only so a few spin in the damp ground and getting nipped and they’re already raggedy.

I wanted to give everyone a high-protein broiler feed for winter to help molting into prettier coats, for both old and new chickens but I’m not sure if I can afford that yet.(saving money for that currently)
Currently we prob will go through one bag of feed per week and already run through one bag purchased the date we bought the new pullets 💀

I have yet to post much pictures of the older flock I think so here’s some.
IMG_2582.jpeg

Pictured above: Mocha(?), Stripey, a new chick, Red. A Golden at the back. Golden and Snowy barely visible.
IMG_2569.jpeg

The recent broody who has broke 4 eggs already since she sit. Yeah it’s to be expected but I was so stupid to give her so many eggs for her first time. She’s also way too heavy for 14 eggs. Anyway now she only getting 6. I washed/wiped her eggs a little, if they wouldn’t hatch GG to her it was a good attempt anyway. My parents aren’t interested in chicks anyway, they take way too long to raise to adulthood. They prefer spending money on point-of-lay pullets.
IMG_2559.jpeg

In her daylight glory. I have yet to see her in light till today morning. It’s sunday so I am home all day. She sat on the wrong nest today after returning from leg stretching. Bruh. Lmao.

IMG_2554.jpeg

Still love the older girls of course even if the attention had to be shifted to the new additions. This morning, before opening the door.
IMG_2558.jpeg

Now everyone seems bold enough to eat so hopefully the pullets and ducklings will fill up in grower feed before the older flock eat it up too lmao I need a better plan to give the flock layer feed and grower feed separately or I have to switch to all grower feed which I can’t purchase locally so it's bad so I may have to wait till next poultry swap(next month!!!)for grower feed or I gotta order it online soon. Especially need it or chick crumbles for the soon to hatch incubator chicks that’s coming soon™️ so yeah. Chaos.

Feathers sure take a beating and never seem to last long all shiny and new. 😁 High protein feed definitely helps.

Yeah! Make me wonder how the hatcheries/farmers do it since all of the chickens, at time of purchase, have soft foot skin, clean comb(then again they barely had a comb as pullets before growing them) clean and soft feathers and just overall not a lot of damaged anything!

I am thinking they probably were raise indoor...? Otherwise I don't get it!

I am always looking at everyone else's birds thinking how pretty they are and mine were always a scraggly mess. 🤣

The runner duckling is growing so fast and the other ducklings(unknown breed) still look the same. Huh. It is taller than the rest now lol.

The new pullets still look the same but with a few obvious pecked broken feathers. Still so fluffy and smell nice though I can’t believe I am admitting this but I love breathing in(clean!)chicken scent. They doesn't smell like anything particular. Maybe kinda like dust or the outdoors when it rains. These pullets’ breeds/mix are pretty good in that they aren’t skittish at least. I'm already warming up to a chick I bought.
IMG_2681.jpeg

I was hoping to raise white leghorns for eggs but didn't get to buy them. Still want white leghorn though, I just like them, lmao. But like, they would've been so flighty so at least these pullets stay grounded.
IMG_2760.jpeg

And I still have one white leghorn, Sunny, which I can aim to breed. I don't need anything to be purebred, just close enough. I want to breed Stripey/Speckles' cockerel to Sunny because they would be close enough to the leghorn body type but that will take a while(most likely a year)so I will need to keep Sunny alive and healthy which is so stressful after losing so many birds!
IMG_2763.jpeg

Some of these is Stripey's/Speckles' chicks probably but I can't tell. Only one is definitely Tricolor's.

So next batch(around August) I will pen in exactly who I want to breed instead of letting the rooster choose whoever and I pick whatever eggs. This batch he had 18 hens and fertilized most of them but still. Next batch, I am thinking of him and only 4 hens because now we have 39 hens/pullets and the chance he would mate with the hens I want is bad and he can't do 39 hens duh.

I meant to do this post sooner but a lot has happened since the idea came to mind. I am still grieving the chicks I got killed and just recently, I got a clutch of 4 eggs killed on day 16 because I moved nests on a late broody(like, just the stall beside her but she be stupid I guess, she pooped heavily near the original nest so I move her eggs over but she decided to sit empty on the original nest 😭)
I was also quite busy with a job and canceled plans on top of cancelled plans so my life is chaos right now. I also missed the chickens I lost dearly, and still upset about this season’s failed clutch from my first broody, but because I have a day off on Easter and so, free time, I should find an outlet to cope, so I’ve decided to write this post. Mostly for myself but also, anyone is free to comment.

Format: name, important detail, personality, appearance. I prioritize funnier pictures first.

"Golden". The only rooster we own. A lil sh** to humans but fine and a good gentleman to the hens I guess. Golden head to neck, black body with laced chest. Yellow striped wings, iridescent tail. Typical rooster package.

"Red". Friendly to me and dominant to other chickens. Tolerant and willing to approach me, she's my current favorite. Red-brown with a tie on her right leg.

"Stripey". Sassy, hissy, bold and yet, flighty still. I love her for her unique personality, appearance and her productivity. An egg per day like the other leghorns 👀
Mottled, striped brown with salmon breast.

And also above. "Speckles". She has mottling on her chest. Looks quite similar to Stripey but personality quite different. Flighty, skittish and much much speedier, she is also more orange and doesn't have stripes like Stripey. Both of them are very light and thin, like Sunny, so I've concluded they're all leghorn type.

"Sunny". Curious, inquisitively bold but still pretty flighty and very capable of doing flips, she's very similar to Stripey and Speckles, but she's pure white(originally anyway, not much could have prevented her from rolling in mud on rainy days 😐)

"Summer". My only surviving Wyandotte...more expensive than two other hens combined. Skittish and clingy to the rooster. I still have no idea how I would acquire another like her but I love the pattern. Black laced brown. Maybe the only Wyandotte I'll ever have at this rate. Purebred is SO expensive!

"Shady". Speedy, flighty. She like to lurk. But just a regular ol' hen. All black feathered with white stripes from face to neck.

"Snowy". Now the shyest, lowest ranking hen. She's usually in the shadow, alone or something.
View attachment 4102646View attachment 4102647
"Butter". Ex-broody. Golden Comet. Calm, reserved, probably less upset about her dead eggs than I am. Yellow with a tie on left leg.
View attachment 4102662
View attachment 4102660
"Nugget". Biggest Golden Comet in the flock. Friendly, tolerant. Not cuddly but other than Red she's the only other chicken who would allow pets. Would do anything for food. Dirty yellow with matte feathers.
View attachment 4102654
“Brown, Mocha” I can’t tell them apart. They are two Isabrowns that aren’t fond of me.
View attachment 4102661
”Orange”. Isabrown. Not fond of me. Orange colored for some reason.
View attachment 4102664
5(?) unnamed Golden Comet. Unique looking bunch but usually move as a flock and I don't have any nickname for them yet. Lays terribly lol, very fat and lazy.

Pretty bunch but not note worthy.

I plan to post more on this thread, as I felt guilty not posting about my chickens and especially the broody hen more. I would've not made so much dumb decisions if I posted it on social media...honestly should've ask about how to keep broody because my first kept her eggs to near hatching date before I got her eggs killed. I think anyone would've told me to not move the nest. Oh well 😢

I'll try to consult the Internet more.
Such pretty birds!
