When I decided to get chickens again I spent tonnes of time looking online at coop designs. Most of my time was spent on BYC. I ended up loving the raised coop design and altered it to fit where I wanted to place it in the yard.
This is my first "real" building project. I designed and planned every portion. I began wanting to build a peaked roof, but found the angles very tough, so I went with a sloped roof instead. I began with a base that was 3.5 x 7 feet. I made the ground level, made the base level and began to dig the trench for the wire. I wish I had waited to dig the trench until after the coop was built, since I didn't know it at the time but I sent my base off square, lol.
I thought building my own would save me money (haha!) I tried to rescue lumber, but it ended up in other projects as none was nice enough for the coop.
This is built so its easy to move, it will come apart in sections.
I still need roofing material, but its currently stained and wrapped with a tarp.
My Appx Costs:
Deck Screws (2 sizes) = $50.00
2 x 4's x 16 = $48.00
2 x 2's x 14 = $42.00
Sheets of Plywood x 5 = $75.00
Sandpaper = $8.00
Tarp = $10.00
Caulking x 3 = $12.00
Stain = $5.00 (love mistints!)
Brushes etc = $ 10.00
Interior Latex = Free
Carabeeners = $9.00
Hinges = $15.00
Latches = $45.00
Chicken Wire = $65.00
2 adjustable vents = $4.50 (Habitat store)
New drill bit ( lol) = $4.00
I loved doing this! It felt so good to complete. Love my girls! Hope this post will help others. If you have any questions, please ask!
