Thanks to BYC for all the wonderful advice - we now have a coop under construction! DH pretty much made it up as he went along. Here's a link to all the pictures
(the chicks also have a little day house - you will see that if you look through - don't confuse it with the "real" thing)

Here's the coop next to the little day house
It's now ready to be painted and then the finishing wire etc needs to go on. We're very open to any other suggestions or criticism to help keep our chicks happy and safe!
It was meant to be a chicken tractor - and still is. DH and I can lift it - but it's pretty heavy. Good thing we're pretty strong
It's approx. 6ft high, 8ft long and 3.5ft wide and will be home to 3-4 chickens.
Oh, and in case you're curious about the lack of slope on the roof - DH is going to roof the whole thing with clear plexiglass. That will be sloped for rain/snow to run off.
