Nice coop, nice flock, looks like quite a bit of roos.

I have never really understood the point of the slanted roof in the back, I have seen a lot of coop like that. What is the purpose for it?

Thanks for the replies everyone.

We are hooked on chickens after struggling to keep up with Coturnix Quail the last 2 years. Man, are they a lot of work for what you get out of them! Little buggers... LOL

The date is correct - I built it last spring (2008) but now that we finally have high speed internet here in the boondocks I found this great site.

Yes, we did have a lot of cockerels from our first hatch. We started off with 24 hatching eggs from a local farmer-friend of mine. It was very rewarding to raise them from eggs to our current flock. We enjoyed all but 2 of those boys in the deep fryer which was a little difficult to do but TASTY!

Our 2 roos that we kept wintered well this year and watch over the girls now for us. Wow do they have spurs now!

This chicken hobby has been great for family time, the kids love to gather eggs everyday and even help with cleaning chores a bit. We have our first bunch of our OWN fertile eggs in the bator now on day 18. The kids are almost excited as Liz and I are for the hatch!

Here's to spring, and waking up to the crowing of a rooster instead of an alarm clock!
