Our dog mauled our duck - Reintroduced to the flock this afternoon!!

Sorry about your duckies, I hope the one gets better. You are right not to want an animal around that is a danger to others.

I think we need to focus on helping the duck here.

I hope that your duck is doing well. I am sorry for some of the replies that you have gotten. You need to do what is best for your situation.

Update us on how she's doing.

This is so sad, keeping you and your duck in my thoughts. I understand what you mean about a dog not fitting in, I have a staff who just doesn't seem to engage with everyone else. Working on it though. Keep us updated

Here's my KC girl today. The Blu-Kote wasn't completely dry when I bandaged her up again as you can see. Butterfly bandages disn't work and she was already distressed so I didn't want to cut her feathers. Her wound seems to have closed up A LOT already. There was very little blood or pus on the bandages (much much less than I thought). She keeps trying to sit in her water bowl and she is standing much taller. :D We're certainly not out of the woods but her odds seem much better now. We put our younger ducklings in with the lonesome duck a week early and she has become mama duck. They follow her everywhere.

On another note, thank you for the support and hugs guys. It has made this horrible time a little more bearable and many of you have given me great advise.

Well remember that you can always take your dog to obedience training and start your dog on a regular exercise plan to diminish some of that destructive energy…. Before you send it to the pound remember that you might as well be putting it to sleep right now. I have had a wild dog like that and if you post an add in the newspaper someone will want it…

I AM SOOOOOOO SORRY for your loss of the ducks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can’t imagine!!!!!

Once, a friend of mine who kept his horse at our barn left the stall door open once – in the stall lived all of my guinea pigs. I will never forget it when “Mousy” (my grey guinea pig with red eyes) got eaten by my dog after the stall door was left open. Beau (the dog) showed up at the back door with the back half of “Mousy’s” body in his mouth. I guess he had already eaten the front half. IT WAS AWFUL!

I am sooooo sorry!

Call an bird vet. They should be able to give you some advice over the phone since you don't have any of those vets in your area. I really like my avian vet and can give you his number if you like. I think it would be worth a try. Also - there is a specialist hospital here where I live.. they too have an avian vet. They have been very kind to me in the past and I am sure would be willing to help you out, even over long distance...

We reintroduced her to the flock today as we could find no open wounds and everything had scabbed over or healed. She was starting to get antsy too being cooped up. She was very happy to be with other ducks again (though they were scared of her for about an hour) but now she fits right in again. I probably won't stop worrying for a few more weeks but she has made such amazing progress in just a week. From deaths door to happily being a normal duck in such short time is amazing to me. It almost makes me wish I did get a picture of how bad it was just to show y'all.
