Our First Ark - Photo Intense... Hope You Like It

We weren't back with the girls more than half an hour before Henrietta went up in the coop and suddenly there wa shower of pine shavings raining down thru the ramp door... She was up there a while. Then Sapphire went up to see what the deal was.

About 3 hours after we got them home and we had the rooster installed in the run too I decided to look in the nesting boxes for a laugh... Well gosh darn

WE HAD OUR FIRST EGG

waiting for us. A very pale brown beauty... The wife and I are so quiet inside tonight. We sat on the bricks next to the coop talking to them. They come right up to us and coo. It's the best. Guess you guys know what I'm talking about huh ?? After getting the rooster in 3 birds looks just right in the coop...

Beautiful Ark! Glad you got an egg...Thank you so much for posting pictures and details of your work... It helps us newbies decide on what we want and need..Dixie

Well it's rainy and a little cold here today, I am glad part of their run is covered. We think they spent most of the night downstairs... the rooster came from a nursery that grows shiitake mushrooms - they kept all their chickens and rooster cooped up in one of the dormant greenhouses and their "roost" was a refrigerator shelf elevated on a few blocks of wood... Our rooster has a crow sound like an old Model A Ford horn, but he's a happy camper. Where he was he was 2nd string to a big Rhode Island Red, now he's his own boss, has his own ladies and is eating like a king. Nan made them oatmeal, later today I am making them salad. They get corn, chicken feed (from Agway), black oil sunflower seeds and wild bird seed...

What a life. I can't wait till it stops being crummy so I can spend more time sitting on the bricks talking to them

Are you going to let them out to range sometimes? Keep an eye on your hens for getting bare backs, one roo to three hens, he could be very busy on them. Of course you can do a search for chicken saddles here too! You did a great job and worked really hard on your ark and it shows. I bet that first egg tasted great. My DH said the first egg here was the most expensive egg he ever ate. Like the Mastercard commercial: Coop and run 1000.00, chickens and supplies, 90.00, spending time with hens, priceless.

Yes the worlds most expensive egg. I used to be a chef, I do a lot of food writing and experimenting. I write on a Cuban Cigar BB as BigMike. I supply you with a recipe for a MikeBialy sandwich. An egg beaten in a small cereal bowl, add your favorite herbs, grated cheese, beans, leftover meat, whatever ever... Microwave for 2 1/2 to 3 minutes. Serve on a toasted bialy or english muffin or bagel. It's how we ate our first egg... WOW

First of all you have to have Bialys to make this concoction.

http://www.habanocigarforum.com/foru...ighlight=bialy

A breakfast sandwich of the McMuffin strain, but a lot tastier. Of course you have to buy OR MAKE your own bialys and this isn't hard to do. Like the pizza dough in a lot of ways, you just let the Bialy dough rise longer, and twice...

Mis en place:

1 or 2 eggs (depending on Bialy size and how hungry you are)
pinch of salt and pepper
pinch of dry tarragon
grated cheeses

options:

grilled ham steak
fried bacon strips
leftover spanish rice or red beans and rice

1 split and toasted bialy

Preparation:
Split and toast your bialy, then spread with homemade mayo. Break and beat egg(s) into a small cereal bowl, add s&p, a dash of cream, the dry tarragon (or whatever is going in, even leftover fried rice) and beat again. Now add your grated cheese. Place bowl in microwave and cook 2 1/2 minutes for 1 egg, or 3 minutes for two eggs. Remove and let setup. Now with a forkwork down into and around edges of the egg until it is free of the bowl, the bowl size acts to keep the egg the perfect shape and size to fit on your bialy. Slide onto the bottom half of the bialy. Top with bacon or fried ham slice or use no meat. Place top half of bialy on and enjoy. A wonderful commuter sandwich on a cold morning.
