Our first chcken coop progress

I really do not want open rafters so I would like to put a ceiling so it could be insulated as well so was hoping for some idea how to do this and still allow the hot air and moisture to get into the rafters where the gable vents and ridge vent would vent it. I'm not sure how big the vent holes would need to be in the ceiling or even if this a good idea

Hmm. Dunno.

I just know that my chickens create an unbelievable amount of dust over the winter when the windows are closed up. Unbelievable. And if there's a hole in the ceiling, that dust is going to go up there and settle. Maybe plan for a way to open it up periodically and sweep/blow it out. I'm not a construction gal, so I don't know how the dynamics of airflow are affected with a ceiling...

Send a PM to frontporchindiana. They have a beautiful coop with a ceiling. Get their feedback.

I would leave the ceiling as an open one unless you are going to store things up there just insulate the roof it's self and then cover it with sheething that way it is a win win for everyone. the chickens get to roost up high and you can feel good about having it insulated.

Now if you choose to go with a ceiling I would put gable vents everyso often that way the heat gets up and out in the summer and in the winter the smell can get out I used to live in SWPA (now in Texas) so I know all but to well about the winters and summers there. The coop looks great I belive it is bigger then My first apt.
