This is the coop my husband built for our 4 girls. We started with an old but solid play structure that was on the property when we bought it last fall. DH designed and built the 4 walls and roof on to the existing elevated platform to make the 4'x 6' coop, and enclosed the 8 x 15 foot run. We used asphalt shingles and a ceiling florescent light cover (well caulked!) from the Habitat for Humanity ReStore for roofing and skylight, "oops" paint from Lowes and Home Depot, and a vinyl remnant from Home Depot for the coop floor and poop board liner, and new hardware cloth, lumber, and for overhead hawk protection, chicken wire. There are two hardware cloth covered vents as well as a 5 foot roof ridge vent. Both ends of the coop open for ease of cleaning, and the roof opens on one side if needed for thorough cleaning, or if more ventilation needed could be propped open with a hardware cloth screen insert. There is also a plexi-glass window next to the pop door. Nest boxes will be added in a couple months as our girls are only 7 weeks old now, and won't be laying until maybe mid August. The run is 8 x 15 ft.
We still have a little more work to do--furring strips screwed in over all hardware cloth edging and more painting...
The girls moved in today. They loved the run, but cried when we shut them up in the coop tonight!
