My 8yo found our very first duck egg this morning!! We are SUPER excited - I had given up hope for any egg production until next Spring (we just bought them a month or so ago and they got very stressed in the move).
For some reason the duck decided to lay her egg on the concrete shed floor, a few feet from the hay-filled nesting box and apparently NOT in the collection of hay alongside the edge of the shed. The egg had a break and a long crack; it was still mostly whole, but pretty grunge covered and not appealing for eating. Sigh!
Here's hoping we have more eggs soon to come and that they come out whole and ready to eat!
I did lay a thin layer of hay out on the shed floor.
