Good morning Everyone,

About two weeks ago now my wife Lisette said something about how she'd like to get some chickens for egg purposes and family fun and I immediately loved the idea. By the way my name is Chris and we have two daughters 11 year old Elycia and 6 year old Marisol we live in Virginia. I was raised in Amelia and remember Grandpa and Grandma Jones who lived next door having a chicken coop and fresh eggs and the fun I had with them chickens although I never really thought about it. Never the less I jumped to action and started researching about raising some Back Yard Chickens which lead me straight to you guys this site and its wonderful members and a fruitful basket of knowledge with many insights which I found ever too helpful in this new venture I had started to pursue. Last Friday one week ago today we purchased our first chicks.
Here we have 2 Araucanas- Easter Eggers, 1 Red Cross Brama, and 1 Buff Brahma

And Also 1 Blue Silkie, 1 White Silkie, 1 Red Frizzle Cochin, 1 Silver Laced Cochin
I haven't got the names down just yet as the girls are having fun with that mom wants egg names girls want to name them how they look Mom ended up with one and the girls named the others. I'll have to post those when they are around so I don't get in trouble for calling them the wrong name.
But Anyway I ended up building a brooder out of junk wood utilizing design ideas I found on "BYC"
Its nothing special but it does the job! Still gotta make a hatch for it as I really didn't realize how fast they start to try and fly around.

To do Saturday for sure.
So today their a week home and 9 days old but looking great no issues only one messy butt over the entire week.

Oh yeah we went back on Saturday and picked up 1 Black Australorp to round out our coop.
Hope everyone enjoys the pictures and thank you for your part in another Jones Family Tradition as we four our hooked for life the girls love the chicks so much.

Hello from Oregon!

What a wonderful post you sent to us! Sounds like you and your family are "hooked" on chickens!! Just like me! And yes, do get a 'hatch' on that brooder. When mine were brand new it was amazing to me how they tried to fly and jump like crazy. I have this one (out of 4) that would crane it's neck and look UP all the time and then suddenly WHOOSH! Up it would go and bonk it's little head on the top...too funny! Best of luck to you, you've come to the right place for any and ALL info on chickens!
