My Coop
My Coop
So to start things off, my 5 year old daughter wanted chickens. She would spend all day and she would collect all kinds of cardboard and tape and construct a house for her chicks. It included windows, table and chair, toilet area, a rug, miniature pictures she drew to put on the walls of their house. (Think small dollhouse size all made of duct tape and cardboard, cut out with kid safety scissors by a 5 year old). We kept telling her no because we don't need more to take care of. But after a while I really liked the idea of designing and building a real coop for her (although my husband still doesn't like them and wants nothing to do with them, he likes to see his little girls happy). So my planning began. And then the build.

And then chicks arrive!

And they grow!

We are currently on week 7 for the little chicks. We have one rooster crowing right now. And suspected 2 others minimum. Total of 10 little chicks. (2 silkies, 2 dark brahmas, 1 light brahma, 2 mille fleurs, 2 frizzle cochins, and 1 golden laced cochin).

What a happy looking little girl with her pretty blue coop! Cute chickens too (that little white frizzle is adorable especially).

Thanks! The white one is soooooo soft and one of my favorites although a little aggressive towards the others. I'm pretty sure hes a roo so the hard part will be to decide which one(s) to keep. He likes to jump up in my lap and on my shoulder.

:highfive: I hope the girls are proud of their achievement! great job on that coop, and the little chickies seem to be thriving too; well done :clap

Thanks! The coop was a fun project for all of us. Since I work as a CAD draftsperson it was fun to layout and make changes as needed and then see the final product. It turned out to be functional. We've had a few upgrades (poop hammock and pvc feeder and nipple waterer) but for the most part it is how I envisioned it. I may add a solid lexan window just for more light during they day if they get stuck inside due to weather. The chicks are growing and seem to be happy and healthy.
