hi all! our banty hen, dandelion went broody a few weeks ago, and we decided that we should just let her sit on some eggs and see what happens. i honestly thought that since she was so small and not covering the eggs quite enough, we wouldn't get any to hatch. we were actually going to try taking the eggs away this week, and going to try to break her of her broodiness, but to my surprise when i checked on her today, a little peepy baby popped out from under her!
it's a mutt, and obviously not hers, but i want to try to determine its paternity.

i know its father is our dark brahma roo, deebs, but i have no idea who the mother is. it came from a brown egg. here's a list of all of our mature standard-sized girls:
gold sex link,
rhode island red,
partridge cochin,
black sex link.

here's a photo: (from a cell phone.. sorry!)

It would either be the Partridge Cochin or the Production Red, telling by that color. Usually gold columbian x partridge or duckwing, resulting in (usually) males who carry both gold and silver alleles, will be a light yellow color with dun/brown stripes.

Like this Easter Egger I hatched a few weeks ago:

If you post photos of the chick when it's fully feathered I can most definitely tell you who the parent is.

four more! i hope they all hatch. she's been sitting on these eggs for nearly four weeks now, so she really deserves some payback for her effort.
