We are very new to being chicken parents. We have 6, 6 week old Sex Links. Since the coop has been done for about 2 weeks, for the last week and a half we have been been putting them in it for the day and bringing them in at night just to be safe. Well, last night we decided that they were ready to stay out for the night. But we were both so nervous we coudlnt help but go out and sit in the coop with them for a while. (My guy made it out of an old shed, so it has lots of room). After about 5 minutes, the girls, one by one, started climbing his arm up to his shoulder-neck and began to purr in his ear!!!!!! PURR!!! Like a cat!! it was the cutest, sweetest thing ever!!!! Is this normal? What does it mean?? I think they are the happiest chickens ever, but I have no experience so...... it was just really cool.... :)

:welcome Thanks for sharing this story, that is very cute. :) I remember back when my first chickens (we have sex links too.) went out into the coop, I used to go in at dusk and bid them goodnight. They would climb onto my arm and roost there. The "purring" just means they're content. You've got keepers!

that's so sweet
One word of caution - when they are on his shoulder - make sure he doesn't look at them!
I did when one was on my shoulder (just glanced at her) and she pecked my eyeball. It hurt like heck!

Very glad to hear that it means they are happy!!!!! Honestly, I was fighting it. Being new to all of this, I didnt want them out over night for another 2 weeks. They went out Friday night ONLY becouse, when we brought them in for the night Thursday they all screamed their lungs out for an hour like p*ssed off teenagers!! lol!! So we figured they were ready. Fully feathered, grown up, teenagers. Ugh!! My heart!! So hearing that this behavior means that they are happy just validates our decision. Thanks guys!!
