our guinea disappears at night??? :(

Joe is going to take the eggs this afternoon and scatter the nest hoping that it will bring her back to the coop tonight. I did post a new thread asking about hybrids and it seems you are right and mostly likely nothing will come of it other than a mutant :( that will most likely suffer and not live long.

Joe will be disposing of the eggs. I am going home on Wednesday and i can't wait to get back to my girls lol we have fallen in love with them and they are now part of the family :) I will let you know if she comes back to the coop tonight or if it takes a few days to break her broodiness.

Miss Guinea is my favourite and it would break my heart if anything happens to her. We have come to the realization that since we live in the bush, sooner or later will mostly loose a chicken or two to predators if we want them to be free range happy chickens but its still tough.

We do have a large 100 feet circumference run that we just added for our 11 birds and this being the first time as chicken parents we are learning alot lol but we still prefer to give them at least half the day to be free range when we are home.

you should leave her hatch some of your chickens eggs she wont know the differnce.

Thanks for the info jammyjammy. He has removed the eggs and disposed of them and has scattered the nest she made. We'll see if she comes back to the coop tonight. Good idea about buying guinea eggs to put under her!!

this whole thing started when we just wanted to rescue some abused chickens and give them a good home. now are run has expanded to a huge thing and they free range most of the day when we are home We are considering expanding the coop and insulating it this fall and building a brooder and b uying our neighbours incubator for next spring lol we are hooked!! but still learning about chickens and guinea's so thanks for the info.

my only fear is that she has nested in bush/forest out back of the house. We live in bear country in northern ontaro and just the other day our neighbour had a pack of wolves in his yard. I fear her being out in the wild on the ground...even in the tree's at night roosting as we have alot of martens in the area. If she gets broody in the coop awesome!! but out in the wild is pretty dangerous around here.

i wonder if she would continue her broddiness in the coop over the next few days, then we could put few chicken eggs under her!

I would lock her up in the run for a week or so and get her back in the habit of roosting in the pen/coop. Gather up those eggs every day, leaving two or three in so she'll return to that nest every day (mark them with a pen or a sharpie - she won't care). When she doesn't return, get all the eggs, herd her to the run and lock her up.

If you mark the eggs you leave in the nest, you can gather the new ones daily for breakfast and cooking.

We have a guinea hen and lately (2 nights in a row now) she has disappeared before they all go to roost. For the last 2 nights we thought she got eaten by a fox or something (we are in the bush in northern ontario) because she is always wandering off on her own. But she showed up late in the afternoon today and then disappeared again!!! There is one section of the bush thats real thick and slightly wet and she is always down there. We have seen her squacking at that section of the bush alot over the last month and hanging out down there.

Is it possible that she has built herself a nest and is laying back there? While we do not have a male guinea, our rooster has been seen having his way with her. My man just called me and said Miss Guinea is missing again and we have been so worried. I fear some predator will get her. He doesn't want to go searching for her at night with a flash light in that area for fear of scaring her off and not being able to find her.

He will be out first thing in the morning and looking for her in that area. He has searched high and low in the back bush all afternoon today with no success but when he got home and had a late lunch then came outside, there she was! in the run. He check her out and she was fine but when he went out to shut the coop door she was missing again. He search all the tree's in and arou nd the coop, under the coop, and in the forest behind the coop. No Miss Guinea.

The area we now think she is, is very thick brush and hard to access. We will have to keep a close eye on her now and being a worried chicken mama i just want to ground her to her room lol i am worried.

Any thoughts or suggestions? If she makes it through the night :(

i was wondering if anyone knew what colour she was? she really doesn't have the noticable white dots on her that i have seen in pictures of guinea's. i can't seem to figure out what she is lol she is mostly dark grey with her white breast area.

She is a Pied Royal Purple. Gorgeous Hen.

And more than likely she does have a nest somewhere. If she were my bird, I would not let her nest outside the safety of the coop or pen, you'll probably lose her and the eggs to a predator. Time to go nest/egg hunting!

Thank you Peeps!! She is a pretty girl :) We found the nest today and disposed of the eggs and scattered the nest. I pray she comes home tonight because i worry!! She is my darling of the bunch and i don't want to loose her!!

If you can't find her, she's probably back at the nest. Is there any way you can go on a "brush safari" and motivate her to come back to the coop? She IS beautiful! If you go, remember the bug spray
