Hello Everyone!
Here is our growing flock. 1 rooster, 8 layer pullets/hens, of which one is a broody momma with 4 chicks, 30 days old today. Started with 4 pullets in Feb 2022; a couple months later a younger rooster and two pullets all about 8 weeks younger than the 4 pullets. Had 2 go broody this past summer - resulted in 3 babies - 1 cockerel and 2 pullets. Gave cockerel to a friend; kept the pullets. Now have the 4 chicks @ 30 day. None scream cockerel to me yet. Waiting til six weeks to ask opinions on sex as I pray for pullets.
Broody momma is almost ready to give up her brood. She still protects them, but less ferociously. She lets them distance themselves about 10 feet away for very short spells. Babies are completely part of the flock. Mom still keeps them near the run all day, but when the flock is around there, they mingle. Babies sleep with the flock since birth.
I absolutely love being a chicken keeper. And I am also very grateful for this community. So much knowledge so freely shared. Your advise has been immeasurable to me over the last almost 1 year. Thank you.
