Our Home-Grown Melamine Problem

We had a rash of cat deaths in my area -- from contaminated cat food that had components manufactured in China. My own cat nearly died and had to be hospitalized for quite some time. My Vet is also my friend, and he was alarmed at what he was seeing.

It was melamine. And we don't know what other contaminates besides the melamine was in the cat food.

These issues of contamination are exactly why we took steps to produce our own food.

Shame on the American producers for not monitoring their product components. They still don't.

This entire issue of "free trade" is multifaceted and has been proven harmful to us. And it isn't just animal food components. We are STILL dealing with horrific issues involving medicines, foods -- you name it.

I avoid grains, and I also have my cats on grain-free foods. This cuts health risks for all of us by a large measure. I have a friend lose both her dogs back in 2005...right before anyone knew what melamine was. They were feed on commercial dry dog foods.

I don't see how whole grains would be a problem. It's the ground grains that they've been shifting with contaminates.

The corn gluten is a real good example. Some of that stuff is contaminated. Worse, if you say anything about that contamination and you work in a testing lab, you will loose your job. It's happening.

You can always grind your own whole grains, just make sure you get grains that are free of chemistry.

All grains are a processed food....whole or not. They are still ground, subject to high heat, and in the form of dog food or cat food (or people breakfast cereal), subjected to high pressure in an extruder. This processing destroys vitamins, which is why these cereal products have to be fortified.

Some people (and pets) CAN eat whole grains without issues. I am not one of them and neither is one of my cats. Grains, whole or not, raise my blood pressure, spike my blood sugar, overload my body with insulin, and helped make me extremely fat. Grains ARE sugar as far as the body is concerned since it just turns to glucose when you digest it.

Grinding your own? Well, that might be better. You wouldn't have the heat/pressure issue to deal with. I could go on for days about how whole grains got their healthy reputation and how much garbage that is, but I am afraid I would put people to sleep

Well said! Most people eat too much grain far too often.

Now I understand what you meant in your posting. Grains are a health problem for you. My chain of thought was on the melamine contamination and I thought that's what you meant. Sorry!

Grains can be a problem for some people.

Woodland Woman, the US human population has mushrooming growth of liver and kidney disease. Much of this can be traced to pharmaceuticals and synthetics like ibuprofen. Could be melamine in our food supply too. It can be so many things and difficult to ferret out. This is why I no longer think that the raw vegans and/or purists are so far out anymore. They have very good points. There are kidney cleanses your husband can do. He may have to take radical departure from the doctor's ideas once he has utilized the doctor's testing to help validate or rule out diagnosis.

I have not been able to get this book yet but I sure am planning on it. I like it because it shows you simple inexpensive ways to attain health without having to get all kinds of exotic ingredients.

I'm kind of surprised that there hasn't been more hullabaloo in the U.S. about milk-chocolate candy and powdered chocolate milk mixes.

South Korea tested and banned some items for Melamine at 1.78 parts per million in Snickers Peanut fun-size, 2.38 ppm in M&Ms, 2.89 ppm in Kit-Kat, and up to 3.36 ppm in Lotte brand biscuits.

Other recalls: Cadbury Dark Chocette, Cadbury Eclairs, Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate, Cadbury Dairy Milk Hazelnut Chocolate, Cadbury Dairy Milk Cookies Chocolate and Cadbury Hazelnut Praline Chocolate.

Orphic brand chocolate smuggled into Thailand contained 34.37 ppm.

White Rabbit Brand chocolate has been recalled in Australia.

I've noticed older candy is often dumped for sale at discount groceries, so there is where you'd be more likely to find old, possibly still-tainted chocolate products.

I know. I heard nothing about it until the night before Halloween when most everybody had already bought their candy. I got an e-mail from NaturalNews.com.

There are several articles on there about it. I generally trust this organization but I found it fishy that I heard nothing about it even from them in the weeks prior to Halloween - not until the night before.

Without getting political it is true that many many many consumer safeguards have been lifted in recent years in favor of free trade and boosting our economy.
