Today we built our homemade brooder - "Peep Show" - the name borrowed from some of you BYC'rs
It's in our living room for our family to enjoy watching the lil fluffy butts grow!
It was simple and easy and looks like it will work out perfectly.
We used a 90 quart clear clastic tub. With the lid we cut it appx in half and used an old stove grate to cover the other half of the brooder. We're using a brooder lamp reflector fixture with a 75 W infrared bulb - we tried a 250W red bulb first and the brooder was up to 100 degrees even with the fixture up higher than the grate. The bottom of the brooder is lined with 4 layers of papertowels that we'll change when necessary - I'm figuring every 5 days or so. We've got a thermometer mounted to the side to make sure the chicks are comfy. And then a small plastic waterer and feeder.
We'll be getting week old chicks from a friend tomorrow - 3 Delawares and 3 Australorps. Once they've grown and are ready to move out to our coop we hope they'll integrate well with our 2 Easter Eggers.
I'm sooooo excited!
