Our introduction to keeping chickens, the high's, the lows and pics of our journey.

I hope she gives you a nice dark egg today! If you're not already lining your nest boxes, cut up squares of old feed bags lining the boxes- makes those clean ups much easier ;)

I never thought to do that Pam. I will have too. I have more messes in nest boxes in winter than any other time... Of course, I have a bad habbit of letting the broodys do their thing in winter. LOL

Speaking of laying. Jace and I got home from school earlier this week and went into the garage to check on my Boadicea (before culling) and we found Loralie in the cat litter nest box. Now... this tiny next box is for the tiny birds. Though Loralie is a faverolles, and smallish, she's not that small. So anyway, we were looking at her as she stood up, fluffed butt in our direction, and we got to see what it looks like to lay an egg in person. Poor birds. No wonder they are so testy when they have to do that every day!

It was pretty cool though.

Oh I know - ouch! Check this out - my golden cuckoo marans first egg from Tuesday on left (a little washed out from my flash) Her second egg today on the right. She was not very happy about it either. Her eggs aren't very dark but she hatched from one about the same shade.

Ouch! I was talking to a lady at lowes, and she was telling how she was collecting eggs for a friend on vacation, and the hens would attack her trying to get the eggs from under them. I said, you've kids right? She said yes. I said, well did you want anyone messing with you when you were laboring, she said no. I said imagine the chickens feeling the same. Lol. She goes, oh right! Lol She thought they were mad because she was taking there babies. I told her that case is worse.

Wow, very cool. I would be happy if I could get eggs that dark. Dark ones seem hard to find around here, which only makes me want some more!

Rosie delivered this one yesterday, must have been a day for doubles!
Rosie (whopper), Cleo (normal store sized egg) and Lavern's (salad sized lol)

(Sorry to Em who is patiently awaiting her first delivery!)

Today I got to stay home and get some accounting done....urrgghhh. Anyway, it meant I could wander down the coop at least 17 times to check on our lovely ladies of the realm 'Eggerdome'

Curly spent most of the morning on a nest, looked like she was going to lay but when she walked off, no egg. Maybe tomorrow.

But I did see Rosie lay ANOTHER double yolker! Massive like yesterdays (which I had in an omlette for lunch today)

Also, Baby was in a box too. I had to check a couple of time on her, eventually, she departed, leaving her very first egg. It was still warm in my hand whee I PM'ed Wrightx4 to let her know. Baby was named after her daughters chicken 'Baby' was killed.

Two doubles in two days, you ripper! Today we got 7/10!

Rosie's weighed in at a whisker under 90g! Nespresso pod is there for reference.

The kids are very excited to be home tomorrow (Saturday) so they can collect eggs during the day. "Best behavior boys or you're not allowed in the run!"

Awww - Baby's first egg :) Thank you for sharing that with me.
Speaking of Baby - The little rooster I hatched from Baby's egg is quirky just like she was. Funny thing is, he has decided to force his friendship upon the faverolles chicks. Here's this full grown rooster following around the seven younger favs all day and night - even roosts with them. Somebody must've told him he fits in with them. It's cute because at first they were afraid of him but now I find them all dustbathing together. He actually looks very much like the sf boys except the pea comb and no feathered boots.

pictures...

If that was not meant for me, sorry, but I do have a couple shots to share since you (Nova) and Ben are familiar with my chick from Baby! This is Salomon my ee/sf (favacauna...lol):

one of the faverolles boys I'm considering to keep...

And Salomon with his friends, six of them anyway. I had trouble getting them to cooperate for a group shot - no matter how much I clucked.

I am sure that was a request for you Pam! I am not complaining :)

Today we have a bit of sunshine, numbers were down yesterday, hoping to hit a new high of 8 today!

Em, any progress with your lazy bone girls?
